About the Artist

Kim Shiel is Zambian born and bred. Growing up on a cattle ranch in the 70's and 80's with her three brothers, she is no stranger to tough! Kim has lived all over the world, and practiced her art in Malta, Dubai, Zambia, and is now back to her home in Zambia where she paints under the watchful eye of her French Bulldog, Bentley, and the resident hornbills! She is happiest in her studio, overlooking the garden, and surrounding bushveld.

Her practice is intuitive and series-based, where paintings reveal themselves. Every body of work begins in a little chaos, tells a story, and is unashamedly Kim! She does not paint beige, and each piece has a little bit of wild and expressive.

A recurring motif has come to define her practice across multiple pieces as loose, outlined organic forms that appear unprompted in the composition. She calls them links. They arrive uninvited, during the process, connecting elements and settling restless surfaces, and bringing the painting home. This is the most personal mark in her practice, because they are the one thing she doesn't build. They are found.
